Hjómeyki Chamber Choir

Hljómeyki was founded in 1974 and has been at the forefront of Icelandic choirs since the beginning. The choir has tackled a wide variety of projects, from Renaissance choral music to rock music. In 1986, Hljómeyki began a collaboration with the Summer Concert in Skálholt, which lasted for three decades, and at that time the group premiered dozens of works by many of the country's leading composers. The choir often takes part in music festivals dedicated to new music, and in recent years it has had a successful collaboration with the Icelandic Academy of the Arts on the performance of graduate students' works. Hljómeyki has also released six CDs with works by Icelandic composers, Hjálmar H. Ragnarsson, Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, Bára Grímsdóttur, Jón Nordal and Sigurður Sævarsson. Hljómeyki also regularly commissiones works by Icelandic composers.

Hljómeyki has taken part in the performance of several operas; Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck, Orfeo by Monteverdi, La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart, Carmen by Bizet and Porgy and Bess by Gershwin and has also performed with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions. The choir has also performed with the bands Todmobile, Sólstafir, Dimma, Skálmöld and Dúndurfréttir. Hljómeyki has been a pioneer in the performance of major Russian works in Iceland and performed, among others Rachmaninov´s Vespers, Choir Concerto by Schnittke and Georgíjs Svírídov's Pushkin Garland.
